How to Prepare For Your Boudoir Session.
Doing a boudoir session can seem incredibly overwhelming. Not only are there things to plan, a photographer to find, and most of all we need to feel comfortable enough in our skin to make these photos everything we dreamed of. Don’t worry…. I got you.
Finding the photographer that’s right for you.
Boudoir photos are some of the most intimate photos you’ll ever take. You want to feel safe and comfortable with your photographer. Talk to them on the phone ahead of time, maybe meet them for coffee. Get to know each other and know whether or not your personalities work together. Ask them how they will guide you during your session. How they will help you get out of your shell. Ask them if they will help you with styling or finding a makeup/ hair artist. Boudoir is an investment in yourself and you want to know that you are investing in the right photographer. For my boudoir sessions, I always book the private studio for you, help you come up with a boudoir look that is timeless, romantic, but most of all, reflects you. I will help you find HMUA’s and have a few robes and items that I also bring to your shoot. Gently guiding of poses’ and finding the best angles is our job. We want you to love your images and yourself in them.
Look for lingerie or clothing 4-6 weeks out.
In the day and age of online shopping, you never know what you’re going to get. And unlike 10-15 years ago, the stores don’t really carry much anymore. You want to make sure that you are prepared, that your selected looks fit well and make you feel incredibly confident. This is especially true for maternity boudoirs, your body is always changing, so having a few options in varying sizes can be helpful. Add in any props that are totally you, (ie: books, glasses, champagne, etc).
Don’t over do it on spray tans.
I know, I know, we all feel so confident with a good tan. But, hear me out. They can look so orangey on camera…. they honestly almost always do. And… they can be splotchy or worse rub off on your lingerie. If you are wearing white….that tanner will stand out. The last thing we want is something to distract from the perfection that you are.
Maintence timelines:
Get you nails either done, shaped, or maybe even just some simple press ons. I know, I am a terrible nail biter and would need to prepare my hands in advance.
Get you hair colored/cut (if need be) about 2 weeks prior.
Shave, wax, exfoliate and moisturize. You want your skin to be on point! Shave and exfoliate the day prior. Waxing can cause irritation so I wouldn’t advise it wihtin the 4-5 days prior to your session. Moisturize the day of. Hydration is always a good look.
If you’re a facial girly, they can also cause irritation. Try to do that 1-2 weeks prior to your session, especially if you have sensitive skin.
Stay hydrate the few days prior.
Makeup and Hair:
So many of you ladies are so amazing at hair and makeup on you own and don’t even need a professional. If you want a professional, your photographer will usually have some amazing recommendations. Bridal tip, if you’re doing a hair and makeup trial, you can try to do your boudoir session the same day. Might as well make the most out it.
The Day of:
Wear loose clothing the day of. You don’t want jean indentions, I know mine make the worst marks. Eat light foods that you know won’t irritate you or cause bloating. For after…. maybe plan a fun date night with your significant other. You’re going to feel sexy and confident so why not show it off and keep the fun going?
